Recap: León and Toluca Split Points

Lack of finishing at Toluca complicates a top 4 finish for Ariel Holan's boys with two matches remaining.

There were no goals scored in today's match between León and Toluca in week 16 of the Apertura 2021 season, despite plenty of chances for both sides to score. Today's draw complicates León's chances of finishing within the top 4 positions which guarantees a direct ticket to the playoffs.

The beginning of the first half was dominated by León who looked to be the aggressor. In the 15th minute, Santiago Colombatto was fouled in the box by Toluca goalkeeper Gustavo Gutiérrez and a penalty was awarded to León. However, moments later the referee overturned the decision after reviewing the VAR.

Víctor Dávila also had a chance to open the scoring in the 32nd minute, but his shot went wide of the keeper's left post.

Toluca reestablished themselves late in the second half, however, and found themselves creating chances and testing Rodolfo Cota gloves.

In general, We had a great match against a very difficult opponent. if anyone deserved to win it was león.

With this result, León sit in the 5th position of the standings with 23 points and a +2 goal differential. Up next for León is a visit to CDMX against the defending champion Cruz Azul who are also fighting to get into the top 4 positions, currently sitting in the 7th position with 20 points.

Our first objective is to make the playoffs. the second is to be within the top 4. two matches remain and they both depend on our effort.

With two matches remaining (at Cruz Azul, vs Necaxa), León have a good chance at landing within the top 4 if they close out the season with two victories.

In other news, David "Avión" Ramírez did not travel with the team due to a possible injury suffered this past week with the Mexican National Team.
